In 2020 we started a new project: walking the Capital Ring. This time the mystery was not ‘where are we going?’, which was already mapped out for us, but ‘what will we find along the way?’. We had only completed the first two sections when lockdown intervened but we did resume gradually and completed the circuit in summer 2024. What would happen if we set out one morning on a train journey without knowing where we were going?
We decided to find out.
It all sounds very carefree but there are some practical problems to overcome: ‘on the day’ train fares are very expensive for long journeys for a start! But we have simplified our approach so our destination is still a mystery until we pick a train and get on board.
Each place provides a different kind of inspiration. We don’t know what we will find when we get there, what we will feel about it, let alone what work we might produce as a result. Here are highlights of our visits so far.

There was a gap for bad weather, the Paris trip in March and the Drawing Breath retreat in April but this time we were not deterred by a bit of rain.
